Mexican Restaurants in Grand Rapids, Michigan area

Here are some ideas of places to go for Mexican food in the greater Grand Rapids area. These are places that we've been to and have some authentic south of the border style cooking. Several places you may never think to visit because they are so small or they don't do a ton of advertising because they are "mom & pop" type dining places. But we always recommend trying new places and new foods because you never know when you'll find a new dish that you absolutely love!

These are by FAR not the only places to go in our coverage area but some ideas that may get you to seek out even more places to visit.

El Granjero Mexican Grill - Located near downtown Grand Rapids and not too far from the John Ball Zoo. This restaurant features REAL authentic mexican food recipes. Fresh and tasty is what you will receive here and don't be afraid to ask about what you see on the menu. There are alot of unique items and the food here is Very Good!

Cafe San Juan- Located in Wyoming near 36th st and Burlingame. This small family owned restaurant features Mexican AND Cuban dishes. I have to mention that their wet burritos, home-made salsa & home-made chips are a favorite of ours. You'll find more of a familiar mexican menu and great weekly specials.

Beltline Bar- Located near 28th and Division very close to US131. They are known for Great, Huge wet burritos but also have excellent chimichangas! They have a full bar so PLAN on ordering Margaritas with your meal! Also, if you don't get the fried ice cream for dessert..then you're crazy..just an FYI.

Cinco de Mayo Downtown- Located downtown Grand Rapids right on the Monroe Center. This is another place that serves great mexican dishes with daily food & drink specials(they do serve alcohol). Their food is excellent and you can expect to clear your plate no matter what you decide to order. BUT save ROOM FOR FRIED ICE CREAM! (seeing a recurring theme?)

Little Mexico Cafe- Located near NW downtown GR. A very popular restaurant that has been around for MANY years. They actually serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a familiar mexican food menu with a full bar. Their food is very good and quite frankly, you don't stay open as long as this place has unless you're doing something Right. They do have live music once in awhile.

Irish On Ionia 2012
McFadden's Irish Saloon, HopCat, and Stella's Lounge today announced its second annual Irish on Ionia St. Patrick's Day Festival. This year's fest will expand the celebration into the streets of downtown Grand Rapids. The Saturday, March 17 signature event will close Ionia St. between Weston and Oakes streets from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and will feature Celtic bands, Celtic dancers, DJs, bagpipers, beer tents and an Irish-inspired food pavilion.
"This year's Irish on Ionia festival will be the largest St. Patrick's Day celebration ever in Grand Rapids Mich., with more than 5,000 people expected to attend," said Mark Sellers, who co-owns HopCat, Stella's Lounge, McFadden's Irish Saloon, The Viceroy & Grand Rapids Brewing Co., with his wife, Michele. "We have an incredible day planned with live music, contests, and of course, many kegs of green beer. Everyone should be here, because everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day."
Irish on Ionia officially begins at 7 a.m. inside McFadden's Irish Saloon, 58 Ionia S.W., with its annual "Kegs & Eggs" Irish breakfast. The outdoor festival opens at 10 a.m. with live bands, DJs, Irish fare and contests throughout the day. The entertainment lineup includes An Dro, Gasta, Ardan Academy of Irish Dance, A.G.T., Belfast Gin, The Waxies and The Kreelers. A complete schedule is available at facebook.com/IrishonIonia
Advance "all access" tickets are $10, and VIP Irish on Ionia T-shirt and ticket bundle (limited quantities) are $20. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at ticketweb.com. They will also be available starting at 4 p.m. the same day at McFadden's, HopCat, Stella's Lounge and The Viceroy. Admission for the event is $15 at the door. These passes provide access to McFadden's and the outdoor festival.
McFadden's will also host the "ShamROCK'IN" VIP party, benefitting Camp O'Malley, on the third floor from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets, $15, include admission to the Irish on Ionia festival, Irish buffet, special drink pricing and DJ and dancing. Tickets are available beginning February 17 at McFadden's.

We will be listing local fish fry information so you can plan your attack. Times, prices and food being served.

Who: St. John Vianney Catholic Church
When: 4:30-7p.m. Fridays, Feb. 24th-March 30th. No fish fry on Good Friday.

Tim Hortons will be opening in Wyoming, Mi on the SE corner of 28th st & Burlingame!

Tim Hortons features Coffee, specialty drinks, snacks & baked goods, sandwiches, wraps, soups & chili and also breakfast.

That is a great spot for this restaurant and we're sure it will be Very busy there in the morning and there isn't a ton of room for the drive through so BEAT the rush.

Don't have an opening date set yet but we'll be sure to post it up.

Surviving the Desk Job: How to Stay Healthy at Work

When we started school, oh so many years ago, no one had to explain to us that the human body was not designed to sit in a chair for 8 hours at a time. Somehow, we inherently knew that we needed recess, physical education, lunch, and even naptime. Even that walk uphill, both ways, in the snow, barefoot, was just part of what we needed to do. So we worked all of those years, graduated to our dream job, and ended up sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours without moving. Sure, we use the facilities, maybe go out to lunch, but mostly we sit on our backsides with horrible posture and stare at a computer screen. At around 4 PM, we begin to search for a pick-me-up, and end up eating candy and soda from the break room. Sure, at age 12, we thought free junk food was like winning the lottery. But as adults, we end up feeling flat-out yucky. We vow that tomorrow will be different, but we are so exhausted from a sedentary lifestyle, that change seems impossible.

The good news is that a desk job does not have to be so stagnant. If something in motion stays in motion, then we need to find ways to keep moving. And with a bit of food preparation, we can actually avoid the Snickers^Ã�Â® bar. Let's look at some ways to stay healthy at work.

Get Out of that Chair

Sometimes it seems impossible to step away from your desk. People in Hollywood get fired for missing a call, an email, or taking too long a lunch. Here is the deal: They cannot fire you for standing up, going to the bathroom, or getting more water from the cooler. If your workplace is not completely rigid, switching your chair out for a Swiss ball a few times a day can make a huge difference in your posture. Even just standing up next to your desk can give your back the break from compressing that it desperately needs. So stand up, roll your shoulders back a few times, and breathe deeply. Go fill up a water bottle, which will give you even more reasons to stand up, as you will need the restroom. And set a timer to go off once an hour, so that you remember to do it. Sometimes that Excel^® spreadsheet is so fascinating, we forget about everything else. (Yeah, right.)

Speaker or Tweaker?

Did you realize your phone can be dangerous? No, this is not a lecture on driving with cell phones. Cradling a phone to your shoulder for extended periods of time can actually lead to misalignment, strains, and slipped discs. They still make fancy phones with a cradle for your shoulder, but they don't extend quite high enough. Try a wireless or corded variety of headset, which sometimes can be less expensive than their Bluetooth^Ã�Â® cousins. Forty bucks on a headset is better than multiple trips to the chiropractor. Or if what you are discussing is not sensitive, put the person on speakerphone. The coworker next to you might not appreciate it, but your neck will.

Stretch

You can stretch your entire body in a cubicle - a lot of it while sitting down. Here are some stretching options, which will release lactic acid buildup and help with structural alignment.

Neck: Lean right ear to right shoulder until you feel a stretch along the left side of your neck, hold for 10 seconds, switch to the other side. Lower chin to chest until you feel a stretch along the back of your neck, hold for 10 seconds. Lift chin toward ceiling, until you feel a stretch along the front of your throat, hold for 10 seconds. Look over your right shoulder, hold for 10 seconds and then over your left.

Shoulders: Extend both arms over head, interlace fingers, turn palms, and push up. Then interlace fingers with palms up behind back, lean forward slightly from waist, and lift arms away from your body.

Arms: Extend arm straight across your body, grasp forearm, and pull extended arm toward your body. Repeat with other arm. Then sit up in your chair, open your knees, and place your palms flat on the chair between them, with your fingertips facing you, and thumbs toward your knees. Push down on your flat palms.

Chest: Lift both arms out to the side, creating a "T" with them. Bend at the elbows, so your hands are going straight up to the ceiling, and you resemble a football goalpost. Pull your elbows back and hold.

Back: Sit up as tall as you can, and pull in your stomach muscles to your spine. Extend one arm across to the opposite arm of the chair, and twist. Hold for 10 seconds, and switch to the other side.

Calves: Stand arms' length away from your desk, both toes facing the desk. Step forward with one foot, and bending the knee, keeping the back knee straight and pushing down in the heel. Switch.

Feet: Remove shoes if possible. Stand in front of desk. Form a "V" with your feet, heels together and toes pointed out at slight angles. Bend knees first, then lift up your heels, and hold for 5 seconds. Straighten knees and lower heels. Repeat 5 times.

Exercise Your Options

The following office exercise options are chair-based exercises for our more modest readers. If you are less aware of the stare, try adding some push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, dips, and squats to this routine. If you have an office with a door that closes, get yourself INSANITY^Ã�Â® right now and skip this entire section. For the following exercises, you'll need an exercise band, like the flat Thera-Band^Ã�Â® variety, which can easily be stored in your desk. And if your chair wheels easily, put the brake on now.

Chest press: Place band around back of chair, looping the ends of the band in each hand. Sit on the edge of your chair with abs pulled in tight, and straight posture. Press arms straight out in front of you, keeping them parallel to the ground. Hold for 2 counts. Fold elbows in and bring back of hands to chest. Repeat 10 times. Can also be used as chest fly, by slightly bending elbows and bringing hands together in front of you, like you are hugging a tree.

Row: Wrap resistance band around the leg of your desk. Sit facing it, both feet on ground, and abs pulled in. Grab one end of band in each hand; bend your arms and slide your elbows back, grazing the sides of your body. Hold for 2 counts, and return your arms to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.

Lateral raises: Sit on the edge of your chair, place both feet on the center of the band, and take an end of the band in each hand. Keeping a very slight bend in the elbow joint, bring both arms out to your sides creating a "T" with them. Hold for 2 counts, and lower your arms back to the sides of your legs. Repeat 10 times.

Posterior deltoid exercise: Hold band, hands 9 to 12 inches apart. Extend arms straight out in front of you, chest level, rolling shoulders back and down, keeping elbows as straight as possible. Open up arms to your sides, hold for 2 counts, and return your arms to the straight position. Repeat 10 times.

Curls: Sit on edge of chair and place both feet in center of band, or wrap band under the legs of the chair. Grab one end of band in each hand. Keeping elbows glued to your sides, bend both elbows and bring hands up toward shoulders. Hold for 2 counts, and lower your hands. Repeat 10 times.

Tricep extensions: Wrap band low around desk leg, and face away from it. Reach behind you, grab ends of band in each hand, and extend both hands to ceiling, with thumbs facing behind you. Hold for 2 counts. Keeping your elbows exactly where they are, let elbows bend slowly until hands reach ears. Extend arms straight toward ceiling again. Repeat 10 times.

Knee abs: Sit on edge of chair, tuck pelvis under slightly, and draw abs deeply into your spine. Lift your heels off the ground, and lift one knee at a time. For a super challenge, lift both knees at the same time, making sure to maintain a C-curve in your spine (keep your abs firmly tucked in). Repeat 10 times.

Leg extensions: Tie one end of band around the base of your chair. Tie the opposing end around your ankle. Sit firmly on chair, keeping backs of legs pressed into the chair. Extend wrapped leg out in front of you until knee is straight. Hold for 2 counts, and lower your leg. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

Hamstring curl: Wrap one end of band under leg of desk, up as high as it can go with other end of band tied to your ankle. Sit facing desk, on edge of chair, and extend leg toward desk. Bend knee and pull foot underneath you. Hold for 2 counts, and return to straight leg position. Repeat 10 times, and switch to other leg.

Chew on This

An ounce of prevention might be a pound of cure, but 4 ounces of carrot sticks will never be as tempting as that bowl of M&M's^Ã�Â® on your coworker's desk. So how do we avoid it? A handful of nuts, a protein bar, or some low-fat trail mix might not remove the craving, but they'll make your hunger dissipate until your next meal, and they don't require refrigeration. You can keep them in your desk at all times. So instead of the bowl, five M&M's might be enough.

Keep Water on Desk

Besides the previously mentioned reason to drink water (getting you out of your chair), hydration in an office setting is sorely overlooked. Your body requires a lot of water, even if you're stuck in a chair. Being well hydrated keeps you mentally alert, flushes out toxins from air conditioning, and will sometimes help with food cravings. So drink up.

Get out

This next tip totally depends on your employer. Most offices have at least a few smokers in them. How come they get to go outside and talk about their weekend, in the sunshine, several times a day? Just because you don't spend 8 dollars a day on cigarettes doesn't mean you can't take a moment and get some fresh air in your lungs. If your boss complains, scream discrimination against nonsmokers. Or you could pick up some candy cigarettes and pretend, as long as you avoid eating them.

It is no surprise that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 67 percent of the population as being unhappy with their career choices. Is this because we all have chosen the wrong careers? Or is it simply that most office workers would rather be outside playing tetherball? As you are well aware, it's difficult to pay the mortgage unless you go to work. But there are many things you can do, while remaining at work, that will keep you feeling better than a Snickers will. Maybe if we all take a few minutes a day to take care of ourselves, that workplace contentment statistic might drop a little. And if that doesn't work, at least we can avoid the horizontal spread of our back ends. Now that is something to be happy about.

How to eat healthy on the road in this crazy, busy world today? This is something that millions of people are faced with day in and day out due to life styles that don't allow us to stop or slow down! People are on the go from morning till night! So what pops into our head first? Of course, fast food!

So let's start there! Re-think what you would normally order! Say a burger, fries and soft drink! If you must have that burger, go bun-less (yes I said bun-less), no cheese, no mayo, no ketchup, pile the lettuce, tomato & onion on for taste. Mustard is OK in small amounts (high in sodium). Next, go for the baked potato w/ chives for flavor (no cheese, butter, etc.) instead of fries. No baked potato on the menu you say, then ask for extra veggies on your burger to fill you up! Last, the drink! Sugar in the soft drink will cause you to crash later and adds unnecessary calories that you could be eating, don't drink your calories! This goes for the soft drinks in disguise as well, sweet tea, dessert coffees, etc.! Your alternatives: natural tea w/ a slice of lemon or lime. I have found that it never hurts to ask for things like lemon or lime slices. You'll be surprised, they just might have it! If you must have it sweet, try buying some packets of Stevia in the raw (I like this since it is not a man made product, flavors pretty good too), store them in a baggie in your car or bag to have on hand when you need them! Of course there's always plain old black coffee too. Don't want the caffeine; try ice water w/ lemon or lime & a dash of salt (not too much)! Most people do not get enough water throughout the day, so here is a great chance to up your water intake for the day!

How about those salads! They're very good, healthy alternatives to sandwiches & burgers. Just make sure you pass on the creamy dressings, & toppings like cheddar cheese, blue cheese, candied pecans, salty crisps that are cracker like, etc. Ask for extra chicken or veggies instead!

Breakfast to go anyone: order plain eggs, scrambled or whole, no cheese. You can even order just egg whites at some fast food places! At McDonald's I pass on the hash browns and pair my eggs w/ an order of oatmeal made w/ water (not milk), hold the brown sugar and keep the fruit in it! A much better carbohydrate that won't spike your blood sugar; which means you won't get that tired groggy feeling or get hungry before lunch!

What I have found even at fast food restaurants is that you can order anything the way you want it, most of the time. I just order what I want and let them take care of how to order it! Most of the time it's less expensive to get just the eggs or just the chicken w/ a few extra veggies. Take for instance the grilled chicken sandwich at McDonalds; a good alternative to your burger. However, that white flour bun is full of empty calories that you don't need! Here's what I order instead and it costs less than a sandwich: two grilled chicken patties cut up, w/ lettuce & tomato, no mayo or dressing!

28th St Metro Cruise Events

Daytime has alot of 'regular traffic' on 28th street. But nighttime is fun for setting up your chairs along 28th street and seeing all the rides driving by.

We recommend that people stay OFF 28th street on Friday and Saturday if you are just traveling somewhere. If you Must use 28th street, then drive in the left lane and leave the right lane for the cruise.

The weather forecast is Absolutely PERFECT. So hopefully we'll see everybody there!
We've been there every year since it started in 2005 and look forward to it.

The annual 'Taste of Grand Rapids' is coming in just over a week!

It will be setup at the usual spot which is next to John Ball zoo and there is plenty of free parking in the nearby John Ball zoo parking lot.

There will be many different restaurants there so people can sample food from places that they may not have visited before. Beer and Wine will also be served.

An AWESOME BBQ competition is another important reason to visit. About 35 teams will be there to compete for the "State Barbecue Champion of Michigan" title.

There is a kids area that typically has inflatables that kids can play on and maybe a ride or two.

Restaurant Week is coming to Grand Rapids November 4th - 13th.

50 restaurants are participating and you will get a special 3 course meal for $20.10 per person.

This is an event to encourage people to get out and try new restaurants and experience some fantastic cooking in our area.

Artprize is having another successful year in Grand Rapids.

I think it's nearly impossible for everyone to see every piece of art that has been entered and it's only going to get worse as this grows.

Which is bad for the artists who enter because you may see an entry after that competition is done that you would have voted for.

I'm going to post a bunch of pics that we took downtown on this site and create an ArtPrize 2010 video to post on the main page like the 2009 vid.

I can't even decide which one is my favorite yet...the stakes are high and I can't wait to see who ends up Winning.

08/31/2010 - Need a GOOD PC game 4 the KIDS? Wizard 101 may be it

Just as a side note...
From a recommendation, I checked out wizard101.com which is an online MMORPG for kids. It's an online role playing game where you can find tons of other players.

The game is very easy to figure out and fun to play. My 5 year old and 8 year old are currently playing and enjoying it. It's visually entertaining, fun to upgrade and build your own character and it's FREE (to a certain point).

You can pretty much play and build your character up to level 10 without spending any money. Then you can't really do any more quests or goto new areas until you buy a subscription or 'CROWNS'.

Right now we are buying crowns and purchasing new areas just to see how it goes.

So if you have kids and they need something fun to do on a rainy day or in the evening, check out www.Wizard101.com and try it for FREE. See what they think

I have checked out so called similar FREE online games but they just don't STICK like this one does with the kids.

So the newsletter has been suffering for it BUT I'm happy to say that we're working on one and one topic featured will be the restaurant "Cafe San Juan"..one of my favorites of course.
